That Means a Lot to Me
92I have said “that means a lot to me” to a lot of people over the years when they have said something that means a lot to me. And sometimes I’ve said things that make people say “that means a lot to me” in response to what I’ve said. But what does “that means a lot to me” really mean? And do we always mean ‘that means a lot to me’ when we say it? I think there’s a possibility that we don’t. It’s one of those phrases we use so often that we don’t think about it. Let’s use a recent conversation I had with Bob as an example.
Stan: “Bob, you’re a heck of a writer, and an all-around swell guy. I bet your parents are proud. If not, they should be.”
Bob: “That means a lot to me, Stan. Thank you.”
Stan: “You’re welcome, Bob. I meant it. A lot.”
Bob: “Stan, I know you meant it. Had you not meant it, it wouldn’t mean so much to me. As it is, it means a lot.”
Stan: “I’m glad it means a lot to you, Bob, for I was afraid it would only mean a little, and I meant it far too much for that.”
Bob: “Why would I think you only meant it a little when you clearly meant it a lot?”
Stan: “I don’t know, Bob. I was just afraid you might misinterpret my ‘a lot’ for ‘a little’. If I had only meant it a little, I probably wouldn’t have even said anything.”
Bob: “So what I’m hearing is that when you don’t say anything about something I’ve done, you only mean it a little? How am I supposed to know if you mean it a little as opposed to not meaning it at all?”
Stan: “I’m lost.”
Bob: “Like the time when you were sick and I carried your newspapers from the driveway to your front door…you never said anything. Did that mean nothing to you, or did it mean a little?”
Stan: “I didn’t know you did that, Bob. I thought I had a new newspaper carrier who had a better throwing arm. Had I known it was you, I would have said something.”
Bob: “You would have said something? You said that if you say something, it really means a lot to you, right? Carrying someone’s newspaper from the driveway to the door really isn’t that big of a deal.”
Stan: “Are you suggesting that I’m lying sometimes when I say “it means a lot to me”?
Bob: “I’m not suggesting anything. You’re the one that said you would have said “it means a lot to me” if you would have known I was the one who moved your newspapers. I’m just trying to get some clarification here.”
Stan: “OK, so I screwed up. Moving the newspapers wasn’t that big of a deal. It really didn’t mean all that much. You got me.”
Bob: “Thanks a lot, Stan. Did you realize it was raining every stinking morning that I moved your newspapers and that I twisted my ankle one morning on your front step?”
Stan: “I had no idea.”
Bob: “And then a rabid squirrel jumped out of one of your trees and bit me on the ear. I couldn’t get away because of my ankle. I had to get rabies shots in the stomach every day for a month.”
Stan: “Oh my gosh! You’re kidding!”
Bob: “No, I’m not. All of this led to complications and I lost my health insurance. Because of that, my wife left me.”
Stan: “Bob, I’m speechless. I really don’t know what to say.”
Bob: “How about, ‘that really means a lot to me, Bob.’?”
Stan: “I would love to say that. But now it just seems so insincere.”
Bob: “Say it right now, or this friendship is over.”
Stan: “Geez, Bob. I’m not sure if I can do that, but I would hate to lose your friendship. Give me a second……..Bob, it really means a lot to me that you twisted your ankle and got rabies from a squirrel and that your wife left you while you were trying to help me with my newspapers when I was sick. I really mean that, a lot.”
Bob: “Are you sure you really mean that?”
Stan: “No, Bob. Not even a little.”
Bob: “Well, it means a lot to me that you tried.”

The fact that you make me laugh means a lot to me. I mean that a lot. Thanks a lot...
This hub had me laughing alot and that means alot to me. LOL
Very funny. And so true as well. It certainly is an overused expression.
This story was mean, alot to me.
It ended too soon - good stuff...
Ummm.... what is alot?
Hahaha...Stan, I just want you to know that this hub meant very little to me.
(Although it did make me grateful for universal healthcare!)
Stan - not alot?
I can see you now. The stage is empty. There is a large "Comedy Central" banner hanging over the center of the back of the stage. The emcee enters and introduces, "Stan Fletcher. He will mean a lot to you."
And you, Stan, begin your "That Means a Lot to Me" comedy routine - the whole nine yards and the audience falls over laughing so hard and clutching their bellies. They are screaming, "Stan, Stan, Stan. More, more, more!"
You have become an instant hit and a national treasure. Now that means a lot to me!
Stan, you write the best hubs. They mean a lot to me. LOL
Quotable quote : "I like you ... You're Funny !"
Does this come under the same catagory as
"Have a Nice Day, Ya'll ?"
I had that said to me in Houston Texas 10 seconds after the SOB had given me a speeding ticket.
It should be extended by adding ... Before someone comes along to Mess it up !"
I hope that means a lot to you !!!
Stan, This is a very funny hub. Those two guys sure get a lot of life and I do mean a lot. I just want you to know that I like this hub, a lot!
You have often said nice things on my hubs. That means large properties to me.
You need to be in New York, Saturday Night Live does NOT know what they're missing. If they ever wake up and hire you, it will mean expensive corner commercial properties to them!
Breaks me up! And that means a lot - - uh - - some - - er - - a little bit - - well, it's OK to me. hahaha. You are gifted, Stan!
As always, your lighthearted expressions of what may or may not be more serious thoughts are priceless :)
Started out like Laurel and Hardy's "Who's on first?" bit, but got even funnier when the sincerity of the phrase was questioned. Ha-ha-ha....JAYE
Very funny. Your a great writer. Best wishes.
I'm sure you see this coming, Stan, but the fact that you wrote this hub means a lot to me. No, it doesn't. Well, maybe a bit.
No, not at all, but that's just me.
Hilarious!!!
You are truly gifted. I dare you to do a monologue and post on youtube. I bet it will go viral.
And there my friends is just a "little" about our "lot" in life. Remember, I love you is never having to say that your sorry or something to that effect. As Brother Dave Gardner once said, When you starting thinking like that you get hooked up in duality and in a finite world...like they said, 'in the beginning', ain't that strong? If there is a beginnning then it has to be accompanied by the dual concept of an ending yet folks hang in tight with it and say, 'that's it by God I believe.'" WB
LOLOLOL!!!! nice one!!
Happy to have inspired you! It means a lot to me! :)
I will be looking forward to it! Of course, I will do everything in my power to help it go viral - even if I think my help is unnecessary.
I can't tell you how much this means to me. Well I can I suppose. It meant a great deal.
It did mean a lot of a little, and to mean a lot of little is better than to mean a little of a lot!!
However it made me laugh not a lot of little, or a little of a lot!!! Oh no it made me laugh a LOT OF A LOT!!!
Keep them coming Stan
Take care
Eiddwen
Yes, you are a funny guy! This did NOT mean a lot to me but I did get my morning laugh. Just one of those cliche sayings I suppose, when people feel awkward and don't know what to say. Kinda like the cashier saying, "How are you today?" When she really doesn't even give a damn. Cashiers have learned not to ask me that question because I will hold the line up telling them "how I am." Funny hub as usual.
lol
I really enjoyed this very clever conversation...thanks for sharing it
Stan, you rock!
yet again another great one... although I am thinking that after your conversation, it sounded like you and Bob had gone through some sort of counseling together. LOL
Great Hub!
Who's Bob? Poor guy's life is ruined, and it doesn't mean a lot to you? On another note, I should start telling people that it means a lot to me. After this conversation you've had, I can clearly see that it would be a good idea. Funny stuff, Stan! Your ability to make me laugh really.... means a lot to me.... or you? Both I guess. :)
Stan, I was planning on saying that this hub has meant alot too me. But, It probably isn't that funny. By now, I'm sure it has been used up. So, I won't say that.
I do want to let you know that this hub has a great deal of heart felt power that I have accepted into the inner most part of my soul....
YOU are one funny man...keep them coming...I am a fan!
:)
Is this based upon a real life encounter, or is it entirl
The parking area in front of Wal Mart means a lot to me. Also, all the parking spaces at the airport mean a lot to me.
Yes, it is scary that we get each other.
I wish I could write such humor, any humor. You have me in stitches!
This article really means alot Stan, thank you!
I must say (as others before me have), I have a lot (not really), to say about your hub titled "that means a lot to me". I think it meant NOTHING to you....just because YOU wrote it, that means very dadgum little to ME!
Thanks A LOT/ALOT!!
